Meditation doesn’t come equally easy to all people. While some can meditate while commuting or waiting in a line, others need to find a suitable space. Focusing can turn out to be difficult with everything that is happening all around us.

If you’re facing such problems, you’re not alone! Nothing is embarrassing in trying something new and learning. Here are a few easy-to-follow steps that can be used to improve your meditation.
- Find a place where you’re feeling comfortable. That’s totally fine if you don’t want people to see you while you’re meditating. Maybe you need total silence, or maybe you need to hear a crowd nearby.
- Sit down. People meditate while standing and even walking, but for the most part, taking a seat is the easiest way to release tension in your body. Find a stable place to sit where you can feel grounded. It can be your apartment floor, a park bench, an office chair—pick the spot that speaks to you the most.
- Focus on your breath. Breathing is a fundamental part of life and, as such, a short path to achieving even temporary mindfulness. As you follow your breathing, you become consciously aware of your place in the present.
- Put on some meditation music. Use the speakers at home or headphones while you’re out but don’t crank the volume up to eleven. Let the gentle sounds soothe your mind and body. If you have problems following your breath, focusing on ambient or relaxation music can help.
- Make meditation a part of your habit. Whenever you plan your daily agenda, make a spot for mindful meditation. Even if you’re struggling or feeling unsure whether you’re meditating correctly, don’t skip your practice. Make it a part of your day so it can become a routine.
You’re practicing and eager to achieve mindfulness, so the hardest step is already behind you. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t focus and relax. Take time to find a comfortable spot for meditating. You’ll get there and meditation will be a consistent part of your life.
